The list below, compiled by 50-year Statehouse reporting veteran Bob Katzen (Beacon Hill Roll Call), shows exactly which representatives did it. Katzen reviewed 105 votes from the 2024 House session, excluding only quorum calls and hyper-local issues.

Why Does My Rep Fall in Line?

The Speaker controls house committee chair and vice-chair positions, which come with hefty pay bumps. Lawmakers know that stepping out of line means losing income and influence.

By the time a bill reaches the floor, it’s already been shaped behind closed doors for months. Representatives often get just hours to review a 100+ page bill before voting, leaving them little choice but to follow leadership’s lead. The result: many lawmakers cast votes without fully knowing what’s in the legislation.
